LED light therapy has moved from a clinic-only treatment to something you can run at your kitchen table in ten minutes. The technology did not change much in that move — what changed is that the devices got cheaper and the question got more interesting: what is the light actually doing?
The answer is a process called photobiomodulation, and it is worth understanding because it explains almost every practical decision you will make: which wavelength you buy, how long you use it, and why more is not better.
Photobiomodulation in plain language
Photobiomodulation is the use of non-ionising light to influence cell behaviour without heating or damaging tissue. It is not a burn, a tan, or a laser ablation. Nothing is removed. Instead, photons are absorbed by specific molecules inside your cells and change what those cells do next.
Three things have to line up for this to happen: the light has to reach the target, the wavelength has to be absorbed by something there, and the dose has to fall inside a useful range. Miss any one of the three and nothing meaningful occurs — which is why two devices that both say "red light therapy" can behave nothing alike.
What the light is absorbed by
The best-studied absorber is cytochrome c oxidase, an enzyme in the mitochondrial membrane. When it absorbs red or near-infrared photons, its activity increases, and that shifts two things inside the cell:
- More ATP. The mitochondria produce more of the energy currency the cell uses for repair, protein synthesis and division.
- A brief, controlled rise in reactive oxygen species. This sounds alarming but is a signalling event, not damage — it triggers transcription factors that nudge the cell toward repair and away from inflammation.
Downstream of that signalling, the effects that matter cosmetically show up as increased collagen activity and a calmer inflammatory environment. That is the mechanism the whole category rests on, and it is why wavelength and dose — not brand — are the variables worth comparing.
Wavelength determines depth, and depth determines what you can treat
Light has to physically reach its target. Shorter wavelengths scatter and are absorbed in the outer layers; longer wavelengths travel further. This single fact explains most of what each colour is good for.

Read that table as a map of what is physically possible. A blue-only device cannot meaningfully treat deep wrinkles, because its light does not arrive where collagen is made. A red-only device cannot target acne bacteria efficiently, because the bacteria sit in a layer red light passes through. Depth is not a marketing claim; it is optics.
Red light, 650nm: the collagen range
Red light in the 630–660nm band is the most studied range in consumer devices and the one most people are actually buying. It reaches the upper dermis, where fibroblasts — the cells that produce collagen and elastin — reside, and it is absorbed efficiently by cytochrome c oxidase along the way.
With consistent use, the usual description is skin that looks firmer and smoother, with fine lines appearing softened. Blue light, 465nm: a different mechanism entirely
Blue light does not work on your mitochondria. It works on bacteria.
The bacteria associated with inflammatory acne, Cutibacterium acnes, produce molecules called porphyrins. Porphyrins absorb blue light strongly, and when they do, they release singlet oxygen — a reactive form of oxygen that damages the bacterial cell. The effect is local and does not involve the thermal damage or the drying irritation of some topical treatments.

Two practical notes: blue light is more energetic than red and sits closer to the UV end of the spectrum, so eye protection matters more during blue sessions. The supporting spectrum, described honestly

Their evidence base is thinner than red and blue, and they support the appearance of skin rather than treating a condition. Green is used for the look of pigmentation and dullness; yellow for the look of redness and texture; cyan and clear blue for the look of sensitivity; purple for the look of stressed skin. You will see these five described elsewhere as though they carry the same weight as the cleared two. They do not. A brand that keeps the distinction visible is telling you something about how it treats the rest of its claims.
Why dose is biphasic — and why longer is not better
Photobiomodulation follows a dose-response curve that rises, peaks, and then falls. Too little light and nothing happens. Around the peak you get the response. Push well past it and the effect flattens and can reverse, because the same signalling that triggers repair becomes overwhelming.

Frequently asked questions
Is LED therapy the same as laser therapy?
No. Lasers are coherent, high-intensity and can ablate or heat tissue. LEDs are non-coherent and low-intensity, which is why they are safe for home use without a clinician and why they act through signalling rather than destruction.
Can I feel it working?
Usually not. A warm sensation is not a sign of efficacy, and near-infrared is invisible entirely. Judge the device on its published wavelength and dose, not on how bright it looks.
Does blue light damage the eyes?
That is why every credible device includes eye protection and a stated protocol. Blue light is more energetic than red, so use the shields provided and keep to the session length.
Can I use it with retinol or acids?
Apply actives after your session rather than before — clean, dry skin is the right starting state, and applying afterwards lets you use the ten minutes productively rather than layering under the light.
